O objetivo desta tese é analisar a trajetória de Afrânio Peixoto (1876-1947) nos espaços médicos e científicos brasileiros entre o final do século XIX e início do século XX, de maneira a conhecer a concepção de ciência que divulgava e os modos como atuava. Construir a análise a partir da trajetória de Afrânio Peixoto permitiu não somente avaliar suas filiações, como também os pontos de vista aos quais se opunha, de forma a conhecer os diferentes eixos que estruturavam as arenas científicas as quais se dedicou higiene, psiquiatria e medicina legal e contribuir para a apreciação da história destes campos no Brasil das primeiras décadas do século XX. O recorte considerado compreende a entrada de Afrânio na Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia (1892) e seu desligamento do projeto da Universidade do Distrito Federal (1935). Minha análise toma como eixo as publicações científicas de Peixoto, seus manuais e artigos científicos. Este material é contextualizado em sua trajetória, ou seja: por um lado considero o momento em que foram escritos no que concerne a seus vínculos ou demandas institucionais, por outro lado ressalto as especificidades daquele cenário, as transformações sociais que ocorreram no bojo da república e a necessidade de responder sobre os meios de construir uma nação e povo civilizado. Demonstro assim, os modos pelos quais o cientista-literato Afrânio Peixoto participou da construção dos campos médicos citados e como, neste processo, divulgou e afirmou seu compromisso explícito com um ideal patriótico de conhecer a realidade da população brasileira para gerar respostas a seus dilemas por meio de um saber genuíno aqui produzido.
Abstract
The objective of this thesis is to analyze the trajectory of Afrânio Peixoto (1876- 1947) in the brazilian scientific and medical areas between the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, in order to know the conception of science that he promoted. The analysis of the trajectory of Peixoto permittes to assess not only their affiliations as well as the points to which he opposed in order to know the different axes that structured the scientific arenas which he worked - hygiene, psychiatry and forensic medicine - thus contributing to the appreciation of the history of these fields in Brazil. The survey comprises his entrance to the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia (1892) and his shutdown of the Federal District University project (1935). My analysis takes as axis his scientific publications, their textbooks and scientific papers. This material is contextualized in its trajectory. On the one hand I consider the moment which they were written in regard to their ties or institutional demands. Furthermore, I analyze the specificities of that scenario, the social transformations that occurred in the wake of the republic and the need to address about the means of build a nation and civilized people. I demonstrate that science promoted by Afrânio Peixoto had an explicit commitment to a patriotic ideal to know the reality of the brazilian population to generate answers to their dilemmas using a native know.
