In this thesis, I analyze the medicine institutionalization process in Goiás State based on the study of the institutions created by local physicians or in other institutions in which they effectively took part. In this sense, my time frame is from 1947 to 1960, which includes the achievement of regional congresses, the foundation of the Medical Association of Goiás, the creation of the medical journal Revista Goiana de Medicina and the opening of the Medicine College of Goiás. From these events and institutions, I identified the multiple environments, either professional or personal, in which these physicians were involved, and the mechanisms and strategies that they used to consolidate a field of research focused on regional pathologies. Given the fact that this region was presented as a privileged area of study of 'rural endemics' - considered major obstacles to the Brazil development in the mid-twentieth century - the expertise of these doctors in
these illnesses, particularly in the Chagas disease, has positively influenced on this institutionalization process, strengthening it. From the networks built with colleagues working in areas of great prestige in the country, stimulated by original clinical research that they had developed locally, they have gained national and international notoriety and consolidated themselves as a relevant medical group. Emphasizing the successful trajectory of Goiás’ physicians, this work lies in the intersection between the History of Science and Medicine studies and Regional History studies, contributing to redefine the center-periphery and nation-region relations from an analysis that prioritizes the idea of ‘circulation’.
