Hospício de Pedro II, which was inaugurated in 1852, has been the first asylum for mentally affected people in Brazil and then is a significant institution in the studies about the history of psychiatry. The objective of this work is to analyze the way different social actors, who took part in the institution solidification, related to each other through the latter half of the 19th century. First of all, we have sought to study some general information about the social profile of people who were admitted between 1850 e 1888. After that, we have delineated individual´s course from those admitted between 1883 e 1889, based on qualitative study of information from the medical records and its attached documents. Different from other works available by now, this one is focused on the role played by other people, especially the patient´s relatives, in the formulation of different institution projects which were slowly being drawn and redefined. From this view, we intend to improve discussions about the history of psychiatry science in Brazil, putting in question classic analyzes, which have created great explanatory models that were only focused on the doctor´s agency in the process.
