Asa Cristina Laurell es médica, posgraduada en salud pública con Especialización en Epidemiología por la Universidad de California (Berkeley, EE.UU.) y Doctora en Sociología por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Reconocida internacionalmente como una de las principales representantes del pensamiento social en salud en Latinoamérica, su producción intelectual tiene, como marca, la discusión del alcance y del carácter histórico-social del proceso salud-enfermedad. En su trayectoria profesional, Asa Cristina Laurell alterna actividades académicas y de gestión con una actividad política fuertemente orientada a la defensa del derecho universal a la salud. Entre otros cargos, tuvo una actuación importante como Secretaria de Salud del Distrito Federal (Ciudad de México) durante el gobierno de Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2000-2006). En esta entrevista, realizada el 13 de diciembre de 2016, en el Departamento de Administración y Planificación en Salud de la Escuela Nacional de Salud Pública, Fundación Oswaldo Cruz (ENSP/Fiocruz), en Río de Janeiro, Brasil, ella habla de los desafíos actuales del pensamiento crítico en salud colectiva y de los principales condicionantes de las reformas de los sistemas de salud en América Latina y, particularmente, en México, a partir del año 2000. Asimismo, discurre sobre la crisis política y económica, y las repercusiones del fortalecimiento de ideas neoliberales, sugiriendo algunas alternativas políticas para la universalización del derecho a la salud en la región.
