A infecção pelo vírus da hepatite B (HBV) é endêmica em muitas partes da África subsaariana. Contudo, sua transmissão através da transfusão de sangue tem sido reduzida pelo rastreamento do antígeno de superfície da hepatite B (HBsAg).
