Abstract in Portuguese
(EMBASA, 2004).
Abstract
Chronic renal failure (CRF) is characterized by loss of function of the kidneys to perform
their functions to eliminate the urine toxic substances, excess water and minerals from the
body (ROMÃO JUNIOR, 2004). According to the Brazilian Census Report of Dialysis in
2008, the estimated number of dialysis patients was 87,044 and more than half (57.4%) were
in the Southeast, 89.4% (n = 35,928) of chronic dialysis patients were being treated by
hemodialysis and 10.6% (n = 3963) by peritoneal dialysis, showing that the number of
patients on dialysis has been increasing annually. Haemodialysis replace the functions of the
kidneys, through the blood passage semipermeable membrane to filter undesirable products,
for this procedure is required for vascular access that blood is taken from the patient's body to
the machine. The survival and quality of life for dialysis patients rely on an excellent quality
water, so it must undergo a special treatment in strict compliance with the standards
standardized by Board Resolution - RDC No. 154 of June 15, 2004. From the health point of
view, the failure of the risks of contamination, improper practices in the treatment procedures
and lack of monitoring, cause serious consequences including death to patients. Whereas the
practice of laboratory monitoring in itself is not sufficient to guarantee the quality of water for
hemodialysis, therefore, the use of assessment tools and risk management and maintenance of
the entire distribution system, consistently applied and comprehensive, are the most efficient
way to ensure safety and quality of water for hemodialysis. (EMBASA, 2004).
