Abstract
The collection of rare and special books, of the Library of History of Sciences and Health, comprises titles ranging from the seventieth to the twentieth century, and form a precious set for the Oswaldo Cruz’s House. The study was intended to identify and value the bindings of this collection, providing information on styles, material and decorative characteristics, and production structures – especially those performed in a handmade manner, without losing the dimension of the transition to the industrial model of editorial production. This investigation also seeks through the intended products (catalogue, diagnosis, inventory and information in the COC database), to assist decision-making in preservation, so that traces of time and the making of the binding activity are not neglected. It is also our intention to offer elements for future research in the field of binding and the preservation of the book as an object, contributing to the global knowledge of the precious collections of the Oswaldo Cruz’s House.
