Abstract
Knowledge on vegetable biodiversity was essential is currently involved in important political discussions. Paradoxically, people have shown difficulty in becoming interested in and learning about plants. The exception are communities strongly bonded to nature, which still value biodiversity and perpetuate knowledge about it. As such, we intended to investigate the potential of popular knowledge on plants as a resource for botany’s critical teaching. Our specific objectives were to analyze the research scenario on the subject and to elucidate the ways through which popular knowledge is considered in teaching processes. To achieve such objectives, the "state of the art" method was applied. Thus, papers on popular knowledge about
plants were selected from any edition of four teaching events - ENPEC, EPEA, ENEBIO, ENECIÊNCIAS - with digital annals available. The selected bibliography was analyzed using 17 descriptors, gathered in the following groups: descriptors about publication; about authors; about research; and aboutthe studied object. The obtained data was interpreted based on the categories that emerged from our own results and critical theoretical basis: critical environmental education and CTS approach. As a result, 77 papers were selected out of 9865 publications (0.78% of the total). Despite the small number, a production growth tendency about the subject is observed. ENPEC and ENEBIO contributed with a greater number of papers, but
greater participation was observed in the EPEA. Although UFBA and UEFS have contributed with a considerable amount of papers, the greater part of the published works come from southeast region of the country. The average authors’ profile includes a degree in biology and post-graduation courses in teaching or education. Only three authors have published more than one paper on the subject. Most of the work involves qualitative research that, under the light of environmental education and / or postmodernism, use case studies or action research as a method to
investigate alternative strategies on teaching at the various levels of formal
education. In these papers, popular knowledge about plants appears as a series of information about the use of plants - mostly medicinal - in the daily lives of traditional, ethnic or rural communities. Its application in teaching is justified, above all, because it encourages environmental and cultural diversities’ preservation. The most used strategy was to investigate local groups’ knowledge on plants - sometimes represented by school community itself - followed by addressing this knowledge in the classroom, generally connected to some scientific subject. In conclusion, popular knowledge can contribute to multicultural and critical teaching, but some steps are
necessary so that research in teaching can increase collaboration on the subject.
