Abstract in Portuguese
As políticas sociais
Abstract
The infantojuvenil cancer treatment directly impacts the lives of patients and their families,
which suffer numerous changes in his routine, everyday relationships and their socioeconomic
conditions. Thus, the research aimed to discuss the progress and limits of the Brazilian social
protection to children and adolescents in cancer treatment, identify the socioeconomic profile
of this population and their families and analyze the infantojuvenil illness implications for
family living. A qualitative approach was used which allows better understand and explain the
beliefs, values, attitudes and habits of a society. The survey was conducted in three
complementary parts: (1) data collection and organization of materials related to the issue of
social protection of children and adolescents in cancer treatment; (2) description and analysis
of the socioeconomic profile of patients and their families, and (3) conducting interviews with
those responsible for the child / adolescent in treatment. Social policies are seen as a key
resource for carrying out the treatment, considering the demand for income and offset, to
enable an effective health care. However, the reflections point there is currently a retraction of
social policies that is expressed in focus and in the transfer of state responsibilities to other
sectors of civil society, especially for the family. Moreover, the results also revealed that all
families had to reorganize to deal with the disease, generating impacts in various areas of life
of the caregiver, who is the woman in most cases. There are several types of support to the
situations arising from cancer. However, it was shown that the disease can weaken family ties
and that all support received, in most cases, are not able to meet the needs that emerge from
the illness. Anyway, it proved to be very important knowledge about socioeconomic
characteristics of patients and their families and the sickening impact on the family living as
well as the limits of social protection, as they are able to interfere significantly in the
effectiveness of cancer treatment infantojuvenil.
