This dissertation approaches juvenile delinquency from a perspective of
the family of 31 male delinquent adolescents, and 31 non delinquents, their brothers or cousins. The premise from which this paper evolves states that the family is the first social institution in which the young individuals participate, and develop their values, character, personality and attitude toward the world. Using qualitative (interviews) and quantitative (psychometric scales) methods the research explores and associates: the perception that the youths have of their family ambience and relationships, their attributional style, their motivation (Ego – external; Task – internal)
and their perception of their family motivational climate (Performance – heterooriented; Mastery – self-oriented). The work also provides a review of the literature of the main theories on the subject, as well as of the theory on causal attribution and the Person Centered Approach. The main characteristics that differ the group of non delinquents from the group of delinquents are pointed out: a more preserved family structure, more contact with the extended family, offering them a wider social suport,
more supervision of their behavior, development of an early sense of responsibility, no criminal record in the family history, Task oriented motivation. Based on the presented theories, the author offers suggestions about a prevention approach concerning juvenile delinquency, that integrates the family processes, the socialcognitive method and the Person Centered Approach.
