Abstract
With the support of the Theory of Social Representations, we explore the question of
experiences of menopause, considering symbolic constructions of gender as the object of
informal educational practices. Our data includes individual interviews and transcripts of
discussion groups with women at the stage of menopause, which were held in a public
health center from 1993 to 1994. The medical literature of this period focuses on the need
for information about the risks and benefits of hormonal therapy. By analysis of discourse,
we show that, beyond specific complaints related to hormonal fluctuations, sociocultural
factors configure this moment as a crisis for some of them. Ideological constructions of
gender cross-cut representations of menopause and sexuality, often affecting their lives in a
negative way. The group sessions, which aimed at de-naturalizing myths of aging and the
‘loss of femininity’ in menopause, among others, show evidence that, with the process of
such reflective discussion, which facilitate the expression of related emotions, it is possible
to break down gender stereotypes, strengthening women as active subjects of their own
health.
