Abstract
The object of study of this communication, on which I also develop my master's thesis, consists of the application of the technique called malaria therapy at the Hospício Nacional de Alienados (HNA) and at the Hospital Gaffrée and Guinle (HGG), during the years of 1926, when the malaria therapy technique was first introduced into the HNA (Pires, 1926, Roxo, 1921), and 1943, when the pilot factory of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute started to produce a considerable volume of penicillin (Cardoso et al., 1945; Gastal et al. , 1999). In this work I propose to make a more general presentation of the theme, including some of the main discussions that derive from it and the trajectory of one of the greatest idealizers of malaria therapy in Rio de Janeiro, Dr. Waldemiro Pires. As sources, I will use the periodical “Archivos Brasileiros de Neuriatria e Psychiatria”, between 1926 and 1936, and the book published by Pires, in 1934, entitled “Malarioterapia”.
