Abstract
This work seeks to understand the issue of school failure based on a complaint with high demand in health services. It is common for students with poor academic performance to be seen as individuals with health problems. In this sense, the author, a pediatrician and public health doctor, sets out to verify in four public schools and a health center, which serve low-income families in the Xth Administrative Region of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, how the social representations that form the network arise of concepts with which social agents, involved with the issue of poor school performance (students, mothers, teachers, lunch ladies, doctors, nurses and dentists), will construct not only their reasoning, but also the way they will seek to resolve the problem. question. In addition to discussing, from a medical point of view, the nosological entities to which the causes of school failure are attributed, this dissertation alludes to family issues, the issue of school itself and other issues that are raised as justification for repetition and poor performance. school achievement. Leaving healthcare facilities, going to school, listening to the people involved allowed the doctor, as a healthcare professional, to understand in more depth a complaint that arrives, not unreasonably, at the office with a certain frequency. Health research is carried out beyond the clinic, also understanding the disease from a socio-epidemiological point of view, with important support from other sciences such as anthropology. Finally, the work addresses the issue of school failure with its due insertion at the level of public (and not individual) social problems, ensuring an effort in popular organization, not only as an essential channel in solving the problem, but also in the fight for citizenship and ensuring citizen rights. School failure cannot be seen as a simple health issue. School failure should not be seen as a failure of the student but rather of the education system, which is not fulfilling its basic role of teaching. Health must not condone this mechanism that disfigures the character of education. It must also collaborate in expanding the channels that allow popular participation, and also, at the level of adequate and efficient support, to resolve possible problems that can really affect the health of students.
