Through printed sources and death records in articulation with the state of the art of historiography on yellow fever, it was possible to establish a relationship between the outbreak of the last decade of the 19th century and the municipality of Jaú. In a context in which the causative agent of yellow fever mobilized wide debates and discussions, whether nationally or internationally, we present the main theories under discussion in the scientific community. From the direct contagion hypothesis, through the idea of miasmas to the acceptance of the mosquito as a vector, the objective is to connect this debate on a national and international level with its implications in our study site.
