Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate how the health-environment relationship has been constructed in basic education, based on reports presented in theses and dissertations defended between 2013 and 2022 in the databases of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) and the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD). Methodologically, a Systematic Literature Review with metadata analysis was conducted. The theoretical framework for this purpose involved a dialogue between the fields of health, environment, and education. An expanded concept of health was adopted, as outlined in the document produced by the 8th Health Conference in 1986, which was reinforced by the concept of One Health, and this health-related issue was linked to environmental themes, particularly focused on sanitation. In analyzing the research corpus, consisting of 17 dissertations and 1 thesis, the study sought to evaluate the type of methodology prioritized in each work, in order to assess the outcomes arising from a traditional teaching approach, as opposed to contributions from active teaching-learning methodologies. It was observed that most of the studies investigated do not address the health-environment relationship in an intrinsic way: out of the 18 investigated works, only 7 managed to achieve a satisfactory integration between these themes. In this sense, one of the central contributions provided by this thesis was the investigation of how each of these 18 works understands the concepts of health and environment It could also be concluded that the most successful works in terms of achieving more effective results with students were those that were based on the adoption of an expanded concept of health and the use of active methodology, especially Gamification, Problem-Based Learning, Didactic Sequences, and Case Studies. In this regard, it was proposed that methodologies alone are not everything when it comes to achieving the intended objective. What remains as a constitutive factor of a more solidly constructed action is the sensitization of students. Finally, recommendations were made seeking to remedy some situations that were identified as problematic during the study.
