In Brazil, starting in the 1980s, there have been numerous government initiatives to address domestic and intra-family violence against women, based on pressure exerted by the women's movement. Among the actions, the construction of Women’s Shelter was witnessed, the first being in 1986, in São Paulo. The objective of this work is to know a Shelter House service for women in situations of domestic violence from the perspective of its professionals, to understand the potentialities, limits and contradictions of the investigated institution. The research was carried out with a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory approach, using semi-structured interviews with seven professionals from a Shelter located in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Taking into account that one of the specific objectives is to outline the profile of the women received, relevant tables were built to present the observable variables available in the institution's database. In the light of feminist, intersectional and decolonial theoretical references, in dialogue with Goffman's (1964) category of total institution, it is argued that the Shelter is permeated with contradictions, since, on the one hand, it guarantees the interruption of the escalation of violence and imminent risk of death for the sheltered women, on the other hand, exercises significant protection and surveillance over their lives, which is why they often feel in a situation of reversal: they have been affected by domestic violence and are They find themselves "prisoners", while the aggressors remain free. This work reflect on the need to rethink Shelters to guarantee more autonomy and leadership for women.
