Abstract
The COVID-19 is characterized by an acute respiratory infection caused by SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, in which presents high transmissibility and potential to evolute to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), in special on elderly population. The first cases were identified in the ending of 2019 in Wuhan (China) and this infection was declared as pandemic by World Health Organization (WHO) in 2020 March 11st. In Brazil, the first case was confirmed in 2020 February, but the first one in Distrito Federal (DF) was reported in 2020 March. This study describes the hospitalizations and deaths caused by COVID-19 in elderly people who live in DF between 2020 to 2022. Around 76.3% of the SARS due COVID-19 reported cases in DF occurred in elderly people, in which the mortality rate estimated as 2256.7 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants. In addition, the most concentration of cases occurred in the administrative district of Ceilândia, where the majority of them were brown people. 97.7% of the cases were hospitalized, in which the elderly people above 80 years old were the most affected (in respect to the number of cases, hospitalization and deaths). About the hospitalized individuals, 52.90% in the intensive care unit (ICU) and 21.14% in the ward had dead. From the 8.243 deaths during this period, 62.2% presented in the maximum two types of comorbities and the most frequent clinical sign or symptom was the dyspnea
