Abstract
More than a decade has passed since Neuroimmunomodulation
published a special issue devoted to the neuroendocrine
control of the thymus [Neuroimmunomodulation
6(1–2), 1999]. It is with great pleasure and honor
that we gathered ten contributions that compose the present
issue entitled ‘Neuroendocrine Immunology of the
Thymus’.
Research groups from various parts of the world conjointly
provided a general overview on this broad subject,
comprising the influences of hormones, neuropeptides
and neurotransmitters upon the phylogeny, ontogeny and involution of the thymus. Moreover, the topic is approached
in pathological situations, including autoimmune
and infectious diseases.
Lastly, hormone-based therapy has been discussed in
the context of thymus-pituitary gland relationships.
It is quite obvious that this special issue of Neuroimmunomodulation
does not pretend to cover the whole
subject. Nevertheless, we hope to provide the readers with
a pleasant flavor of such a complex and exciting subarea
in the field.
