Abstract in Portuguese
A ETE-Brazlândia
Abstract
The water availability in the world has been undergoing severe transformations. This is because
the demand for water in the various sectors such as human consumption, industry and
agriculture has been increasing, but the safe water sources have been reducing. The Federal
District (FD) also reflected this problem and is having a drastic reduction in the reservoir’s
volume due to the low pluviometric index. One of them, Descoberto River, which supplies
about 60% of the local population and attends a producer pole of farm, fruit and vegetables
lands, is scene of conflicts over the use of water. This work aimed to analyze the technical
feasibility of the use of the effluent treated by a local Sewage Treatment Plant (STP-Brazlândia)
in the region's crops based on the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO)
and Food and Agriculture Administration of the United Nations Organization (FAO). In
addition, it was made a survey of the system irrigation’s types used and its possible substitution
by others with lesser consume of water. The STP-Brazlândia system is composed by anaerobic
ponds, followed by facultative, and although this system presents good operational
performance, its effluent could not be reused directly in the crops due to the high
microbiological load, representing a potential risk to the local workers and consumers according
to WHO. It is also worth noting that the concentrations of organic matter and nutrients presented
in the treated sewage would be attractive for this practice, but a more careful evaluation of its
toxicity to the crops would be important as recommends FAO. Most of the irrigation methods
used are by spraying which has a higher water expenditure than others already developed as
drip irrigation. It is estimated that simply replacing these systems would result in a daily gross
saving of approximately 20,000 cubic meters. This volume would be sufficient to supply a city
of 100,000 residents. Therefore, such measures should be further developed to reduce local
conflicts over water, especially in times of scarcity.
