Abstract
The present dissertation in the field of Management of Health Information &
Communication discusses different approaches to manage information in the context of a techno-scientific institution in the area of clinical research, the Institute of Clinical Research Evandro Chagas (IPEC), affiliated to the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ). The study analyzes the social transformations secondary to the establishment of the so-called Information Society in the 1960s, and its subsequent developments. The dissertation highlights the key role of information systems for the most different institutions and their close links with all other institutional activities and
operations, fostering increased productivity. The dissertation emphasizes the need to concentrate efforts in the accurate identification of needs, current and/or hypothetical, in advance to any concrete step to be taken in the actual implementation of information systems. Finally, the dissertation illustrates the aforementioned conceptual developments with a case study: an innovative information system to be applied to the needs of the Leishmaniasis Reference Center from IPEC-FIOCRUZ. The conceptual
model of such system used UML - Unified Modeling Language, as a fundamental tool, an internationally acclaimed tool to be used in the design and construction of information systems.
