Abstract
This thesis aims to analyze the construction of the Transamazon Highway (BR-230), walking through official and unofficial advertisements about it to the social and health impacts of its realization, with the perspective that this enterprise was a synthesis of a dictatorial government, a period of social and economic optimism and the instrumentalization of the brute force technology. Transamazon Highway was announced on June 16, 1970, through Decree-Law n. 1.106, as an instrument of the National Integration Program (PIN). Implemented by the government of Emilio Garrastazu Médici (1969-1974), by its various government agencies and construction contractors, the BR-230 intended to link the Atlantic Ocean, from Cabedelo, Paraíba, to the Pacific Ocean, in Lima, Peru, however, ended in the amazonian city of Lábrea. In this thesis, we understand the versions on the idealization of the highway, the actions of government institutions to make it viable, government advertisements, the cultural scenario that the highway inspired, the impacts of its arrival on some indigenous peoples and the promises for the settlers of the their colonization projects.
