O trabalho versa sobre o corpo de saúde do exército brasileiro na Guerra do Paraguai. Analisa como o conflito provocou um debate em torno da necessidade de se reformar o serviço de saúde. Mostra como as experiências na Guerra da Crimeia e na Guerra Civil Americana integraram tal discussão. Analisa também a cirurgia em campo de batalha, atentando para as influências teóricas dos médicos militares, instrumentos e métodos utilizados. Por último, tematiza a epidemia de cólera de 1867, enfatizando, particularmente, o estrago provocado por tal epidemia em Corrientes e durante o episódio conhecido como "Retirada da Laguna".
Abstract
The work that the reader has in hand is about the health of the body of the Brazilian army in the War of Paraguay. Analyzes how the conflict has led to a debate on the need to reform the health service. Shows how the experiences in the Crimean War and the Civil War joined this discussion. It also analyzes the surgery on the battlefield, noting the theoretical influences of military doctors, instruments and methods used. Finally, discuss the cholera epidemic of 1867, emphasizing in particular the damage caused by such an epidemic in Corrientes and during the episode known as "Retirada da Laguna."
