Abstract
This dissertation tries to understand the dynamics of social networks in face of the difficulties
of food subsistence in a situation of poverty. The issue is discussed from the point of view of
members of religious groups that participate of a social network organized in Rio de Janeiro
city. It shows that social networks are a potential way to foster public health work and to
develop public policies integrated with the community. It points to the new social movements
as a means to redefine citizenship and to build strong solidarity links; it stresses, in the
process, the drive of social support and the building of social networks that emerge from the
re-elaboration of the religious practice in face of the extreme poverty of a significant share of
the population. The empirical material for this dissertation was treated by means of content
analysis thematic modality. The results show different perspectives for the actions developed
by the groups in accordance with their religious insertion and their nature – from paternalistc
and “assistentialist” approaches, that promote dependency, to social advancement iniciatives
that foster empowerment and citizenship. The study found that in the search of solutions for
the problems of the poor, the groups faced obstacles they couldn’t confront. The respondents
viewed the cause of these problems as a consequence, among other things, of social
inequalities that exist for many decades. Unanimously, the respondents think that social
networks are a space where it’s possible to strengthen and legitimate the struggle for better
living conditions.
