Abstract
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis that still leads to death around
5000 people yearly in Brazil and the highest incidence is in the state of Rio de Janeiro (approximately 800
people per year). This study aims to analyze the feasibility of implementing a pilot garden on the slab of the
Instituto Vila Rosário, at Duque de Caxias-RJ as well as the technical, financial and production of this
deployment. It also aims to establish the conditions necessary for the maintenance and sustainability of longterm
system. 7 plant species were cultivated with action scientifically proven to aid the prevention and
treatment of tuberculosis. About 12 kg of plant material was collected throughout the project. The results
showed that it is feasible to implement a garden taking advantage of the model used. However, for expansion
of the project it will be necessary to optimize the process, promote the training of people involved and rely
on political and financial incentive through organizations concerned. The Institute will be responsible for
project monitoring to assess the positive effect of membership of this project in cases of tuberculosis (TB) in
the region where it operates.
