| pt_BR |

Abstract | This work aimed to discuss the context of building of the first Asylum for the Insane in São Luís do Maranhão (Brasil) between the years 1882 to 1892. During the period, an intellectual class proposed a modernizing project to the city, which was led by belletristic, rational and hygienic changes. The Administrative Board of Santa Casa de Misericordia de Maranhão’s proposal in 1882, was thus part of this project. It was both associated to a charitable orientation of the Brotherhood of Mercy and the illustrated civilization principles of the Second Brazilian Empire. However, due to political, social and economic circumstances, the Hospice of São Luis was never finished. After construction delays, its project was finally abandoned in 1892. After Republic, the Santa Casa, by agreement with the State, decided to keep the alienated in the Charity Hospital, which welcomed victims of various diseases. Ultimately, this thesis wanted to understand the causes of Hospice construction’s demands, as well as the barriers that prevented it to be finished at the time. | pt_BR |
