Introdução: Streptococcus pneumoniae constitui um dos mais importantes patógenos
bacterianos do trato respiratório, sendo causa freqüente de otite e sinusite, bem como de
doenças invasivas sérias tais como, pneumonia, septicemia e meningite. A bactéria ganha
acesso ao hospedeiro através da colonização da nasofaringe e o sucesso deste processo
depende tanto da virulência do sorotipo colonizante quanto da eficiência do sistema
imune do hospedeiro
