O artigo destaca a discussão sobre a interrupção segura da gravidez em andamento no Supremo Tribunal Federal, com uma audiência pública para ouvir mais de 500 instituições interessadas no tema. A comunidade acadêmica, representada no 12º Congresso Brasileiro de Saúde Coletiva, considera a questão como um direito da mulher e uma questão de saúde pública, especialmente devido aos riscos enfrentados pelas mulheres que recorrem ao aborto inseguro. Esses riscos são mais elevados entre mulheres negras e pobres, refletindo as desigualdades sociais e econômicas do país. O texto destaca que, embora parcialmente criminalizado no Brasil, o aborto inseguro é praticado por centenas de milhares de mulheres todos os anos. A Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) não faz distinção entre abortos legais ou ilegais, mas classifica-os em termos de segurança. A OMS promove diretrizes para garantir que a interrupção da gravidez ocorra de maneira segura, minimizando os riscos de complicações e mortes associadas aos métodos inseguros. Pesquisas mostram que criminalizar o aborto não reduz o número de procedimentos realizados, apenas os torna mais inseguros e clandestinos. Uma revisão sistemática de pesquisas nacionais evidencia que a criminalização não impede as mulheres de buscar o aborto, mas aumenta os riscos associados a ele. Além disso, o artigo menciona a pesquisa "Cartas do Cárcere", que analisou mais de oito mil cartas enviadas por detentos ou seus familiares à Ouvidoria Nacional de Serviços Penais. Essas cartas revelam a precária situação do sistema prisional brasileiro, incluindo superlotação, falta de cuidados básicos de saúde e condições inadequadas de higiene e alimentação. A pesquisa destaca a necessidade de reflexão sobre o hiperencarceramento no país e as condições desumanas enfrentadas pelos detentos, incluindo restrições ao acesso a informações e canais de comunicação externos.
