| pt_BR |

Abstract | The present study relates to an epidemiological survey of oral health among adolescent students within the age group from 15 to 19 years who were enrolled in public and private schools in the city of Manaus, Amazonas. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of dental caries and gingivitis and assess the need for restorative treatment among this population. The sample consisted of 889 students who were enrolled in 26 schools that were distributed proportionally among the urban administrative zones of the city. The schools were chosen by means of a weighted draw. A single dental surgeon with prior calibration (Kappa = 0.91) performed the dental examinations. The DMFT index (decayed, missing and filled teeth) and gingival index (Löe & Silness, 1967) was used. The DMFT index obtained was 4.65 (± 0.12). The biggest contribution to the index was made by the decayed component (2.62 ± 0.09), followed by filled (1.24 ± 0.07) and missing (0.78 ± 0.04). There were no significant differences in the DMFT index in relation to sex or ethnicity. The prevalence of dental caries was 87.4%. The percentage free of caries was 12.6%. The greatest percentage treatment need was for restoration of a tooth surface, in 59.3% of the sample, followed by pulp treatment (31.2%). Mild gingival inflammation was present in 78.5% and gingival bleeding after probing was found in 53.3% of the sample. The data suggest that there is a need to implement oral healthcare measures. | pt_BR |
