| en_US |

Abstract | This article seeks to investigate the meanings of the 2009 H1N1 Influenza in two Rio de Janeiro newspapers coverage: O Globo and O Dia. The goal is to identify how this coverage shaped a narrative about the pandemic, which emotions were mobilized and what demands were raised. The
findings show that “fear” was one of the main feelings presented, due to the disease’s “novelty”, “unpredictability” and the strong expectation of lethality presented. Another important element was authorities’ image concerning to how they faced the disease. Fear was both an excuse for their action
and the basis for its disqualification, appearing as the very source of insecurity. Fear was associated to other feelings such as insecurity and indignation, generating demands to authorities actions. However, this claim disqualified the sphere of politics, reinforcing the newspapers authority as the legitimate for such claims. | en_US |
