| Abstract in Portuguese | O artigo analisa a atuação da Comissão de Obras Federais do Território do Acre e as oposições locais à construção de estradas de rodagem na região. Após a anexação do Acre ao Brasil, pelo Tratado de Petrópolis de 1903, o governo federal elevou a área a condição de território federal, dividindo-a em três e, depois de 1912, quatro unidades administrativas independentes umas das outras: departamentos do Alto Acre, Alto Purus, Alto Juruá e Tarauacá. A Comissão de Obras Federais foi criada em 1907 em resposta a falta de integração física entre os departamentos. A análise das reações das elites seringalistas ao projeto de integração territorial pensado pelo governo federal é primordial nesse artigo, que aponta a força dos rios e dos varadouros nas comunicações como responsáveis pelo fracasso do projeto de rodovias e pelo fim dos trabalhos da Comissão de Obras Federais em 1910. | en_US |

| Abstract | The article analyzes the performance of the Commission of Federal Works of the Territory of Acre and the local opposition to
construction of highways in the region. After the annexation of Acre to Brazil, by the Treaty of Petrópolis in 1903, the federal government raised the area to the status of federal territory, dividing it into three and, after 1912, four independent administrative units: departments of the Alto Acre, Alto Purus, Alto Juruá and Tarauacá. The Federal Works Commission was created in 1907 in response to the lack of physical integration between the departments. The analysis of the reactions of the rubber elites to the territorial integration project designed by the federal government is paramount in this article, which points to the the strength of the rivers and the shores in the communications as responsible for the failure of the project of highways and by the end of the work of the Federal Works Commission in 1910. | en_US |
