Abstract
The fishes can be parasitized by many species belonging to different phyla. The Monogenea are ectoparasites and the diseases caused by them are considered of great importance for the fishes. As they have direct life cycle, high fecundity, host specificity and a great number of species, Monogenea constitute a good model for studies. Monogenea collected of Astyanax altiparanae of net cages the reservoir the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Station Binational and the Paraná river were studied, with the aim of increase the knowledge of the diversity of parasites and characterization on the their communities, contributing to the knowledge of biodiversity of helminth fauna of Brazil. Forty five specimens of A. altiparanae were examined, the gills were removed and placed in formalin 1:4000, had shaken and the volume was completed to reach 4%, making the fixation of the parasites. The parasites collected were mounted on slides in Hoyer's medium or stained with Gomori's trichrome, and later studied by light microscopy. Based on this two species of Dactylogyridae belonging to subfamily Ancyrocephalinae were found parasitizing Astyanax altiparanae. The first resembles the description of Notozothecium (Boeger & Kritsky, 1988) and the second species collected was Diaphorocleidus kabatai (Molnar, Hanek & Fernando, 1974) Jogunoori, Kritsky & Venkatanarasaiah, 2004. This last species was predominant and the present paper reports the first occurrence in the Brazil and in a new host.
