| pt_BR |

Abstract | This dissertation discusses how yellow fever affected Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro in the 1870´s. The starting point for this analysis was two epidemics of this disease, one in Rio de Janeiro in 1873 and another in Buenos Aires in 1871. It was made through the description of the urban face, the epidemics, the reaction of both population and political actors of those cities in the period. This dissertation also maps the medical discourse generated in the main scientific institutions of those two cities at the time: The Imperial Academy of Medicine, in Rio de Janeiro and The Medical Association of Buenos Aires. The sources used in this dissertation were newspapers of citywide circulation in times of epidemic, the reports of the Business Ministry of the Brazilian Empire, which contains the report of the president of the organ responsible for the matters of hygiene in the Court and the report presented to this same organ due to the epidemic of yellow fever in Buenos Aires in 1871. Scientific journals published by The Imperial Academy of Medicine of Brazil and The Medical Association of Buenos Aires. Reports from the institutions that were responsible for fostering harbor safety and hygiene in Buenos Aires. Postures, acts and ordinances related to hygiene in Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. The conclusion points towards the differences of the reactions of the governmental institutions and population of those two cities in face of the disease. To the differences in signification and production of local knowledge about yellow fever between Argentineans and Brazilians, as to some similarities in the relationship between the organs responsible for creating hygiene policies and the ones responsible for executing them. | pt_BR |
