O texto discute a importância de uma leitura transversal de uma revista ou jornal, que leve em consideração os diferentes textos e informações presentes na publicação. O autor defende que uma leitura superficial pode levar a uma compreensão equivocada do conteúdo, pois não considera a relação entre os diferentes textos e informações. O texto cita exemplos concretos de como uma leitura transversal pode ser útil para compreender o conteúdo de uma revista ou jornal. Por exemplo, o autor cita o caso da crítica da Rede Internacional de Cooperação Tecnológica em Aids ao custo inviável do tratamento por causa da Lei de Patentes. Essa crítica confirma o consenso do Fórum Social Mundial da Saúde de que o neoliberalismo é a grande ameaça à saúde no mundo. O autor também cita o caso do Grupo Reviver, que desenvolve um trabalho de humanização e integralidade na atenção básica no bairro de Santa Cruz, no Rio de Janeiro. Esse trabalho é possível graças ao empenho de profissionais dedicados e da comunidade participante.
