Esta dissertação de mestrado tem como objetivo principal analisar como a Sociedade Brasileira de Neurologia, Psiquiatria e Medicina Legal (SBNPML) atuou no processo de institucionalização da psiquiatria no Rio de Janeiro, no período de 1907 1933. Nesse processo, a psiquiatria se constituía enquanto uma área da medicina, especializada no estudo e tratamento das doenças mentais e moléstias nervosas , demarcando seu espaço de atuação em relação a outras áreas, como a medicina legal e a neurologia. Como fontes primárias utilizamos, principalmente, as atas das sessões da Sociedade publicadas no periódico Arquivos Brasileiros de Psiquiatria, Neurologia e Medicina Legal até 1918, renomeado a partir de então como Arquivos Brasileiros de Neuriatria e Psiquiatria. Também analisamos os estatutos da instituição, a legislação sobre a assistência psiquiátrica e relativa ao ensino médico e alguns jornais da época. Procuramos assim analisar a SBNPML, enquanto ator social importante deste processo de institucionalização, observando: seu grupo de sócios; suas mudanças institucionais estatutárias; quais os temas e projetos debatidos nas suas sessões sobre a ciência e a assistência psiquiátrica, bem como os relativos à especialização e profissionalização dos médicos nas áreas do conhecimento que compunham essa agremiação.(AU)
Abstract
This dissertation for a Masters degree has as its principal aim to analyze how the Brazilian Society of Neurology, Psychiatry and Forensic Medicine (SBNPML) acted on the process of institutionalization of the psychiatry in Rio de Janeiro, during the period between 1907 and 1933. In such process, psychiatry was establishing itself as an area of medicine specialized on the study and treatment of the “mental diseases and nervous maladies,” marking its boundaries in relation to other areas, like forensic medicine and neurology. For
this research, the principal documents studied were the acts of the sessions of the Society published in its periodical, Brazilian Archives of Psychiatry, Neurology and Forensic Medicine, which, after 1918, changed its name to Brazilian Archives of Neuriatry and Psychiatry. The statutes of the institution, the legislation about the psychiatric care and the medical education and newspapers of the period were also analyzed. The SBNPML, as an important social actor in this process of institutionalization, was analyzed with special attention to its group of members, the transformations occurred on the statutes of the society, the subjects and projects debated on the sessions of the society regarding the production of science and the mental health care, as well as the specialization and professionalization of the physicians in the areas of knowledge that are part of the name of the society.
