Abstract in Portuguese
As
Abstract
The present study sought to know the perceptions of health professionals regarding the
treatment of battered women at reference centers in Natal, Brazil. Violence has been gradually
directed towards the health sector, in order to offer concrete responses to the different
transgressions that affect the life and integrity of individuals. Women to achieve a significant
representativeness in the epidemiological profile of violence-related morbidity-mortality .
Health professionals, those primarily responsible for establishing bonds of trust between
patients and care services, to be in a strategic position to detect and intervene. Therefore, it
was important to know the perceptions of these professionals in terms of care provided to
women in situations of sexual abuse, in order to understand the process of implementing this
care,in the health sectors. The qualitative methodology was considered the most adequate for
providing answers to the object in question. The semi-structured interview was the instrument
employed. After content analysis, the study indicated that for the professional, this emergency
care is given grudgingly, is considered occasional, is not perceived as an institutional vocation
and causes much anxiety and suffering. Attitudes and perceptions resulting from values
acquired during academic formation, based on the traditional medical model, where women
are perceived as a non-subject, and the culture of emergency care precludes better interaction,
since there are no preventive measures or affiliation with the intersectorial network. Within a
technical model, there is prioritization on access, but using an individualist and drug-based
approach. Qualifications are insufficient or nonexistent and there is a significant manifestation
in terms of the need for institutional support. At the end of the paper a number of questions,
study limitations and proposals was put forth, based on the results obtained.
