O estudo objetiva compreender a transformação do câncer em problema social e alvo do saber médico. Analisamos o período que se estende entre o início do século XX e a década de 30, discutindo como o contato dos médicos brasileiros com as redes internacionais moldou seu interesse pela doença. Também discutimos a transformação da doença em alvo da saúde pública no inicio da década de 20 e o surgimento de diferentes projetos para a ampliação da ação da saúde pública em relação à doença na década seguinte. Nesse período identificamos um processo de real aceitação do câncer como objeto da medicina e da saúde pública nacional.
Abstract
The study aims to understand the transformation of cancer in a social problem and as target of the medical knowledge. We analyze the period that comprehend the beginnings of the twenty century and the decade of 30, discussing how the contact of the Brazilian doctors with the international networks shaped their interest on the disease. We also discuss the transformation of the disease in a target of the public health in the beginning of the decade of 20 and the arising of different projects to the enlargement of the public health action towards the disease in the next decade. On this period we identified a process of real acceptance of cancer as object of national medicine and public health.
