Abstract
In the last decades it is growing the demand for alternative health care, in a holistic way caring
for the whole individual (achieving equilibrium among body, mind, and soul). The World
Health Organization (WHO) is supporting and promoting the use of Health Complementary
and Integrative Practices by the health care systems of its member states in a secure and
effective way. PICS is the designation adopted by WHO to refer to the health care systems
different from biomedicine, such as the Chinese Traditional Medicine (CTM), the Alternative
and Complementary Medicine (ACM), and body practices. This paper aims at contributing to
the promotion of such practices. To this end it was performed a systematic review about the
argument in Brazilian publications covering the period from 2000 until July 2012, using the
following keywords: Integrative and Complementary Practices, Integrative Practices, Chinese
Traditional Medicine, Complementary Medicine, Alternative Medicine, and Integrative
Medicine. Even though this growing interest on PICs by the society, and of being something
that benefits life quality and promotes health, still there is a small number of health care
services which offer this kind of attention, the investment on studies and research are limited,
the required professional training is a result of individual efforts, and the information and
dissemination are limited to the environment where the practices are performed.
