Invisibilizadas por agências de fomento, indústrias farmacêuticas e organizações de saúde nacionais e internacionais, as doenças fúngicas afetam mais de 1 bilhão de indivíduos contabilizando mais de 1,5 milhão de mortes, segundo estimativas da Ação Global de Fundos para Infecções Fúngicas. A criptococose, uma das maiores causas de morte entre indivíduos com AIDS, mata 136 mil indivíduos por ano, sendo a causa de morte de 50% pacientes com AIDS que desenvolvem infecção fúngica no Brasil. Estimativas apontam que pelo menos metade destas mortes poderiam ser evitadas se houvesse diagnóstico e precoce e tratamento adequado. Entretanto, a maioria dos testes e exames são pouco sensíveis e imprecisos, além de estar indisponíveis em áreas mais pobres. Em função do alto custo e acentuados efeitos colaterais, a terapia antifúngica também é representa um fator limitante à redução das taxas de mortalidade das micoses. Esforços que contribuam para minimizar o cenário dramático das micoses no Brasil e no mundo é urgente. Nesse sentido, o projeto busca realizar uma cartografia da produção do conhecimento nacional em criptococose e se suas possíveis formas de translação para a assistência à saúde e desenvolvimento tecnológico, a fim de subsidiar a formulação de políticas públicas estimular investimentos em pesquisa e desenvolvimento que modifiquem, de fato, o curso e gravidade dessa doença no Brasil.
