Abstract
During the 2015 to 2016 Zika virus (ZIKV) outbreak in Brazil, hospital surveillance for congenital Zika infection was conducted at the José Maria de Magalhães Netto reference maternity hospital, located in Salvador, Brazil, between February and December 2016. 1 Normocephalic infants with prenatal exposure to ZIKV were recruited if serologic testing or polymerase chain reaction assay for ZIKV was positive. All their mothers reported ZIKV infection symptoms during pregnancy and had anti-ZIKV IgG positivity at the time of delivery. Newborns were considered normocephalic if head circumference at birth measured within 2 S.D. for gestational age and sex. Any infant with identified neurological or genetic disorders was excluded.
