Abstract in Portuguese
A presente dissertação
Abstract
Although Solid–Medical waste represent, according to Brazilian Institute of Geography and
Statistics, that represent only 1% of the total of the solid residues generated in Brazil. This
problematic is a subject with extreme importance, since the inadequate handling and management
represents potential risk to people’s health that manipulate them, as well as contributes to the
increase of the hospital infection rate that could cause damages to the environment. Specifically
in Brazil, could notices that Solid-Medical waste don’t have a correct handling, control, treatment
and destination. However, could also notices today the concern with this part of residues has an
evolution in terms of concern. This dissertation presents the theme of Solid–Medical waste in
Brazil, identifies the main problems existed and argues the best form to solve them, as well as
identifies and evaluates the currently treatment technologies and do a research in 6(six) public
hospitals in Rio de Janeiro city, showing how these biological residues treatment proceed;
evaluates such technologies and identifies which criteria these hospitals use to choose such
technologies. This paper has the purpose agroup information and data on this thematic to know
the problem, analyze and argue alternatives treatment existing today, contributing not only for
practical, but also for planning of the best solutions in this area.
