Abstract
This paper aims at understanding the dynamics through which the association acted as representation of the scientific community during the period of political transition from the military dictatorship to the democratic regime, from the mid-1970s until the end of the 1980s. We will highlight the special role played by members of the Rio de Janeiro regional department who, from the mid-1970s, began to demand an emphasis on the political dimension of the SBPC and the expansion of its interlocution with the demands of society. We will analyse the initiatives of scientific dissemination, such as the magazine Ciência Hoje (RCH) and the Informe Ciência Hoje (ICH), proposed and developed by the “Rio Group”, arguing that they were essential elements for the propagation of this view and for the concrete actions with which this group contributed to the viability of new formats for the internal and external proceedings of the association
