Abstract
This article addresses one of the points that the author works on in his master's thesis, about the process of organizing cancerology in Ceará. It discusses the role of a group of physicians in structuring a specific practice for cancer control in the state, mobilizing themselves at institutional levels (with the creation of the Ceará Cancer Institute, the Faculty of Medicine and the Fernando Pinto) and in everyday practice (with discussions about the disease in the specific medical association, Centro Médico Cearense). In this text, it will be analyzed how the topic of gastric cancer was discussed in one of the first annual meetings of the Medical Center (CMC). It argues that these meetings were fundamental for the articulation of a group of professionals aiming at the establishment of cancerology as a relevant medical practice in the state, as it opened space for discussions about specific medical techniques and knowledge related to the disease, which, combined with more broad in the medical and public health scenario, made possible a first systematization of anticancer actions in Ceará.
