O objetivo deste artigo é demonstrar os diversos usos e significados da ideia de“luta pela existência” na produção intelectual deAluísio Azevedo, especialmente a partir das crônicas literárias publicadas entre os anos de 1880 e 1881 no jornal anticlerical O pensadore no romance O cortiço (1890). Discutiremos como a noção evolutiva subsidiou o intelectual brasileiro em sua interpretação do Brasil e sua população, sobretudo, em um período de intensas transformações sociais e culturais.
Abstract
he current article aims to show the diverse application and meaning of the concept “struggle for existence” in Aluisio Azevedo’s intellectual work, especially in the literary chronicles published by the anti-church newspaper O pensador, between 1880 and 1881 and in the novel O Cortico, 1890. We will discuss how evolutionism principles supported the Brazilian intellectual in his interpretations of Brazil and its population, in a period of intense socio-cultural transformation
