Abstract
This dissertation presents aspects of the process of conservation and preservation of historical collection of 3,555 glass negatives that are under the custody of the Collection and Museum Division of the Botanical Garden Research Institute of Rio de Janeiro, in the technical reserve of the Collection and Memory Galpão. In 1997, the JBRJ was contemplated through the Kuhlmann Museum, in the Public Notice for Fostering Culture by Fundação Vitae, which aimed to benefit museums Brazilians maintained by non-profit institutions. The Center for Conservation and Photographic Preservation (CCPF-Funarte), body linked to the National Arts Foundation - Funarte acted as a technical agent in the conservation process of these glass negatives. Our research sought to recover in the documents and reports referring to the stages, the procedures adopted that defined the execution of conservation and preservation works, and the innovative process of photographic duplication from chemical inversion. Special emphasis was given to part of the collection of glass negatives that portray a scientific adventure from Rio de Janeiro to the Amazon. These images were produced by a group of Belgian biologists who were in Brazil between 1922 and 1923, led by veteran biologist and naturalist Jean Massart, in the Belgian Biological Mission in Brazil. We present, as a product of the dissertation, the series of innovative procedures for conservation, preservation, diagnosis, packaging and storage, applied by the CCPF-Funarte team to the set of glass negatives that could be sources of research for students and researchers in the field of conservation and photographic preservation.
