O presente artigo analisa a questão racial na correspondência de Monteiro Lobato com Arthur Neiva no âmbito da qual o escritor fez declarações que tiveram repercussão na polêmica recente envolvendo o racismo em sua obra e biografia. Situa o debate racial no contexto do repertório intelectual dos dois missivistas e da rede intelectual que os mantiveram próximos. Tal repertório e rede foram marcados pelo engajamento em projetos articulados ao debate nacional e envolveu o sanitarismo, eugenia, o regionalismo paulista e o americanismo.
Abstract
This article analyzes the racial issue in Monteiro Lobato's correspondence with the scientist Arthur Neiva, in which the first made racist statements that have been echoing in the recent controversy about racism in his life and work. It situates the racial debate into the intellectual discourses and networks that approached the two epistlers. This shared worldview was established by the engagement of both in projects associated with the 'national question' and involved public health, eugenics, São Paulo's regionalism and americanism.
