Abstract
The pandemic of Covid-19 is one of the biggest health challenges today, with 80% of
the cases becoming severe and requiring intensive care units (ICU), generating a
lethality rate for the world of 2.98%, for Brazil of 2.92%, and for the Northeast of
2.87%. Pernambuco is the second Brazilian state with the highest lethality (5.44%).
Studies conducted in Brazil show that there is a relationship between lethality by
Covid-19 and concentrations of health services. This study aimed to know the
distribution of the lethality by Covid-19 and of the clinical and ICU beds in
Pernambuco. The analysis showed that the cities that presented the highest lethality
are concentrated in the metropolitan macro-region, area with the lowest rates of
clinical and ICU beds, exclusive or not for treatment of cases of Covid-19. There is a
spatial concentration of deaths concomitant with the low rates of beds in the
metropolitan health macro-region of Pernambuco, probably related to the urban
organization of this region which, like other metropolitan regions of Brazil and the
Northeast, does not present an infrastructure consistent with the large population
contingent that moves to this region.
