Abstract
Analyzes the dual value of the conception of Brazilian nature and climate conveyed by the Imperial Academy of Medicine, in the period from 1830 to 1850. It focuses on aspects of Western thought from the 18th and 19th centuries with regard to the definitions of tropical nature and its positive or negative character assigned to her. It addresses themes present in the ideological universe articulated by the lordly class in the process of building the Imperial State. It recalls some scientific affiliations of the doctors at the Imperial Academy of Medicine. It analyzes how the romanticized character of Brazilian nature coexists, within medical discourse, with conceptions of the unhealthiness of the tropical climate.
