Objetivos: Avaliar as condições socioeconômicas, percepções, conhecimentos e práticas relacionadas à saúde bucal de uma amostra de alunos da Escola Estadual Vieira Marques, localizada no município de Santos Dumont - Minas Gerais, como mecanismo para obtenção de subsídios no desenvolvimento de ações educativas em saúde adequadas à realidade desta população.
Métodos: A amostra foi constituída por 100 alunos da 3ª e 4ª séries do Ensino Fundamental participantes do Programa Municipal de Atenção à Saúde Bucal desenvolvido na referida escola. O instrumento utilizado para a pesquisa de campo foi um questionário ilustrado composto por seis questões de múltipla escolha.
Resultados: Os resultados indicam que há uma maior ênfase à higiene bucal mais como um meio de prevenção da cárie; demonstrando um conhecimento incompleto sobre o papel da dieta.
Conclusão: Concluiu-se que há necessidade de reformulação do Programa Municipal de Atenção a Saúde Bucal, para que sejam amplia-dos os conteúdos abordados para além das técnicas de escovação; estabelecendo-se parcerias com os funcionários da escola, pais de alunos e comunidade; além da necessidade de que se utilize o maior número possível de atividades e figuras motivadoras que gerem um maior impacto sobre as crianças.
