Este artigo examina a trajetória de Domingos José Freire, um bacteriologista que obteve grande projeção nacional e internacional no último quartel do século passado por haver reivindicado a descoberta do micróbio da febre amarela e de uma vacina que foi inoculada em milhares de pessoas. O artigo recupera as principais controvérsias protagonizadas por este cientista e procura mostrar o papel que desempenhou na entronização da medicina pasteuriana no Brasil.
Abstract
The article examines the trajectory of Domingos José Freire, a bacteriologist who attained great national and international renown in the final quarter of the last century for claiming to have discovered the yellow-fever microbe and a vaccine that was administered to thousands of people. The article reviews the main controversies protagonized by this scientist and endeavors to show the role he played in the enthronement of Pasteurian medicine in Brazil.
