O consumo excessivo de bebidas alcoólicas constitui-se em relevante problema de Saúde Pública, pois apresenta como consequências diretas, ou relacionadas, o surgimento de doenças cardiovasculares, neoplasias, transtornos mentais e comportamentais, absenteísmo, acidentes de trabalho e de transporte, agressões, homicídios, suicídios e elevada frequência de ocupação de leitos hospitalares. Estimativas da Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS) apontam a participação dessa substância como causa específica de morte na proporção de 40% a 60% das vítimas de acidentes de transporte terrestre (ATT).
